Executed as a ceiling fresco and conceived on the island of Ikaria, this work is deeply infused with the island’s storied culture of dance—a rhythm that is both communal and transcendent. This is Kali not as a static icon, but as a participant in a primal, Dionysian movement that echoes the circular, trance-like energy of the Ikariotikos.
While she is caught in the throes of dance, the chaos of her movement is pierced by a singular moment of stillness: the direct gaze. Unlike the battle against the external ego, this painting captures the intimate Darshan—the sacred exchange of sight where Kali recognises Shiva, and in doing so, recognises the stillness within her own fury.
